Lets just say I don't think they make very good pets and heres why: Deena really wanted to buy one for a late bday pressie so we went to the pet store today. The employee was helping us pick one out, so naturally Deena was picking a few up and looking at the shells and how big they were. We liked one tiny one that was pink with little mouse ears and a ribbon painted on it! :D The employee was trying to show how they outgrow their shell, so she picked up one of the biggest with a red shell.
Thats when it clamped onto her right ring finger, on the 3rd segment of her finger closest to her palm!!! Talk about a painful spot! OMG It was so scary!!! D: The employee was trying to get it off her finger but it only squeezed her finger harder! He tried running it under water and submerging it completely in water, but it only squeezed tighter!!! I felt so helpless :( Poor little Deena was crying hysterically, gathering quite a crowd of bystanders! I cant even imagine the pain she must've been in! It seemed to drag on for at least 10 minutes :(
One lady tried to help by suggesting that we put a lighter flame on its shell to make it let go. As sketchy as that sounded, I still liked her idea lol. The employee decided to try the opposite by putting it in a freezer. She put her hand in the freezer and in about a minute it finally let go!!!! They felt horrible about the whole incident and gave a bandaid and ointment, and it left 4 gashes in her finger, since it clamped on with both its huge front claws! Poor Deena was crying all the way home :'( It was quite a traumatic event and lets just say we'll NEVER ever be getting a hermit crab ever! Im not sure what happened to it, but I officially wage war on that hermit crab!
What a soap opera it turned out to be.
